Wargaming Threatens to Ban Social Groups for Mentioning Armored Warfare

Hello warriors,

a nice little scandal started on the Vkontakte social network. For those who do not know: Vkontakte (transl. "in contact", is also known as "Russian Facebook") is a social network that is widely popular in CIS countries (more than Facebook anyway) and is the major social network to advertise on when doing business in Russia.

Recently, an interesting article with screenshots was published in the SMMshtiki group (https://vk.com/wall-43503600_162265) describing the incident as such:

There is another VK group called "Podslushano World of Tanks" (http://vk.com/overhear_wot) - a World of Tanks fan group by the look of things (jokes and such) and a BIG one at that (146 thousand followers). Recently, an administrator of this WoT group turned to the SMM group (which apparently deals with these matters) with a question. He was contacted by a representative of Wargaming social network department and was asked not to distribute any materials about Armored Warfare (or - specifically - to delete posts about Armored Warfare). When he asked why and whether it is illegal, the representative told him that:

"We as a social network department are following all the major World of Tanks communities and we are not interested in losing players to other projects by the means of communities, using our brand and content, which are subjected to intellectual property law".

In other words - if you write about World of Tanks, you better not mention Armored Warfare. The representative continues that if they do not comply, the group might be cancelled like this group was: (https://vk.com/wotclear) - he specifically mentions this example.

The threatened administrator was NOT happy and turned for help to Vkontakte support service. There they told him that Wargaming has no such right to do that and that you can post whatever you want in the group, on which the Wargaming representative reacted by forcing the administrator to remove EVERYTHING connected to World of Tanks (including the group name) from the group or face a ban.

So there you have it - you better not mention Armored Warfare anywhere or Wargaming will ban your ass.

My opinion about all of this is that they may be both Tank games and direct competitors but also they represent Tanks of different eras. I believe they can coexist. Armored Warfare is not going to steal the love I have for World of Tanks and vice-versa. But Hey! The more they fight the better for us customers right?  What do you think about all of this?

  3. WoT is protecting its property and doesn't want to get all touchy feely with a competing company ripping off the successful tank game model it created.

Ever see two separate supermarkets sharing the same people for promotions? Hell no. They sign to one company and agree to never promote the competition. If you want support from one company you are sure as hell not going to get it from another rival one at the same time.

  4. I don't understand this. Either WG is hurting, which doesn't seem likely or it's just some incompetent middle management types mistakenly thinking they are doing something for the good of the company.

As much as SerB trolls people about "then go join army" or "go play" some other game, I can't see this as a corporate thing, because if this was something coming from the top, they would have gotten SerB to shut up before now.

I don't say this often, but basically it comes down to WG needing to fire some people. Remember when War Thunder Ground forces was going to "kill" WoT? Well, it's been a year and WTGF is little more than a joke. "Arcade Mode" is to WoT what WoWP is to War Thunder Planes. The only playable mode is Sim Battles and even then that can be frustrating to play and 2-8 minute queue times can be even more frustrating. Along with a Matchmaker that makes WoT look state of the art and super efficient and a progression system that makes no sense at all.

So yeah, WG, fire these idiots.

  9. "My opinion about all of this is that they may be both Tank games and direct competitors but also they represent Tanks of different eras. I believe they can coexist. "

No, they can't coexist. The reason why so many players play WoT is because it is a game about tanks. It's not great but it was the only one. So far.

Now that there is a direct competitor, and this thing confirms just how scared WG is, they will lose a lot of players. Why ? Because most people can't play two games at the same time (normal people do have jobs, and do have families, etc.), so they have to choose, that's why they can't coexist.

    1. You know nothing Jon Snow.

Park an advertising van promoting a rival in front of anyones business and watch them get "hyperdefensive" about it.

Its called not letting yourself get shat on, getting your companies income slowly sucked away by imitators. If you have no balls to defend your brand you deserve to lose as much income as rivals can steal from you.

Everyone in business is out to keep what they have and get more. WoT is getting heavy handed about people with influence blurring the lines between itself and a company copying it. In this case some social group leader bigging up a rival in a group entirely composed of WoT players. Why not shoot him down for it if you can?

      Delete
  11. WoT and AW may cover different time periods, but after all they are both about tanks, and they are similar enough to be considered close competition.

If Obsidian will determine right the causes people leaving WoT, and will avoid them in AW, also not putting any new issues, will get a big portion of disgruntled WoT players.

WG put tiself in the corner, many times denying problems reported by players, and if they would suddenly start fixing them, it would be obvious what and why is happening, and WG would lose its face.

So they prefer to do stupid things, as usual.

    1. I feel that WG, in the close future will do something with artys, because they see that AW arty model (for example: special ammo wich did low or no damage at all to enemy tanks) are MUCH better that this RNG crap we have.

      Delete
    2. Compared to Gaijin, WG is absolutely fantastic at fixing problems with the game.

War Thunder has been around for two and a half years and still don't even have a progression/tiering/leveling system that makes sense. In fact the current system that was supposed to "fix" the old one makes even less sense. And there matchmaker is actually broken. As in filling teams with tanks or planes that, in theory, according to how the MM is suppose to work, shouldn't even see each other. Imagine if in WoT most of your team was Tier 4, with a few Tier 5s and the whole team was made up of Tier 7s. That's how bad it is.

So yeah, stop trying to make WG sound novel in it's inabilities to fix certain things.

      Delete
    3. What problems? WOTs is a 9 out of 10. WOTs has ZERO major problems. UR also wrong. Jingles said arty in AW was identicle to WOTs, but they r reworking it. My only complaint with WOTs is arty, but im a good player and rarely get killed by arty and farm WAY more damage of them noobs then they farm from me.

    2. Agreed. As I saw in several forum WoT should loose first the real old ( >2-3yr playing WoT) and well experianced players when AW come out. They quite bored with WG sh*t, and broken promises. Most of them already developed as many tank tree as they want, so they have no challanges in WoT (Especially with a very limited and slow new contents that we saw patch by patch.). If these people leave WoT the remaining avarage plyerbase will have more and more issue with "noobs" and MM than nowadays.

    3. " If these people leave WoT the remaining avarage plyerbase will have more and more issue with "noobs" and MM than nowadays."

This is already happening. Higher tier games have been getting worse and worse the past 3 or 4 months with what seems like an exodus of better and more experienced players leaving just the new players to that tier and the incompetent idiots that some how managed to win enough games to get to tier 10

  18. They should be scared. But only about losing the US player base. I dont think AW can challenge WG on a global level. But I see many of the better players leaving WoT for AW if for no other reason then the broken @ss arty that is in WoT. WG feels the need to have a class where a 42% scrub can nuke any player in the game from complete safety with 1 shot. Which AW seems to want to get right
I will only put money into one game at a time, you can bet it will be the one that doesnt cater to a class of create for morons who cant/wont learn the game.

Maybe AW will make WG rethink their stance on arty, but I think they are to stubborn to change.

    ReplyDelete

    1. LOL arty eh, if you are more aware you'll find you get nuked a lot less often :) Over the many battles I have played artillery hasn't ever been a game breaker for me, course I don't sit still a lot or if I do its in good cover. AW does have things that resemble artillery and so more than likely will be complained about just as much by the people who like to just sit and shoot .
WoT name is the same as what I post under :)

      Delete
    2. UR wrong. Most good players RARELY get killed by arty. Only NOOBS sit out in the open to get shot by arty. I get one shot by arty once every 100 games, maybe even 200. I get killed by arty occasionally, but it's rare. If you stay on the move and go to arty safe areas arty is mostly impotent esp at higher tiers where reload is so slow. When I play lights I love arty both to give me spotting damage and to farm damage off of.

  19. The problem with AW for WG is that there's one thing that they can't do; provide people with the opportunity to drive "their" tank from the service, and for a lot of people that means the M1 Abrams.

Two, this is where the hangover from the Soviet-style customer service sets in and though I think that there was been some improvement poisoning is a cumulative event.

  20. Wg feels threatened by AW because of a very obvious issue with the tanks in use. AW starts from where WoT ends [the various tier 9-10 tanks]. AW seems to be trying to bring a modern feel to tanks from the Vietnam era on and those same tanks are horribly miss represented in the current "iron sight" version WoT uses. This means the end game players who are running these tanks may very well be interested in AW almost like progression. Personally Wot needs to re-balance a number of things and refocus on WW2 vehicles, if they do so they wouldn't really have much over all to worry about AW. Just an opinion though :)

  23. I think, WG have rights to be angry. If the group is using there name and logo, it should not be other names and logos, without there aprouval. This is intelectual property rights. No problem for anyone to publish whatever he want in the Social networks, if he is not using WG property for this. Let's this group change the name and remove the logo, then it is OK.
In fact, the words like "Property rights" (including intelectual, but not limited to) are not well known in Russia. It is covering personal property, intelectual property, other states property....

But they can get you banned for (mis)using IP. Also, making changes to the concept that was proposed by IP holder can get you banned by VK.

Mind you it's just a loose translation as i'm not really good at marketing language. But basically VK staff advises "not to bite the hand that feeds you".

  40. To be clear, I think that they should possibly rename the groups so they aren't using their namesake, and then they can't say anything.

That being the problem, to which I understand, if something says World of tanks, half these tomatoes aren't going to understand it isn't Wargaming's product, and therefore the creator or mods can do or say anything they want to sway that large groups opinion of a product.

For all the tomatoes know, AW is another version of WOT for instance.

Pretty sure that is what they are getting at.

Likewise, I don't think that is unreasonable for any product and or service to which you don't want people using your brand name to advertise for the competitor.

This is Logic, which much like is shown here, and over at World of tanks International facebook fan group; that people just don't have and it turns into a shitstorm of stupidity and trash talk and an attempt at slander where there is no need.

I recommended that the World of tanks International Facebook group change their name and make clear disclaimers to protect themselves, but probably can't because the owner is in jail (pretty sure) https://www.facebook.com/groups/wotinternational/?fref=nf

TBH Rita, my heart goes out to you, I knew this would be a real tough position to be in, saw it coming through "For the record" as WG were putting a good bit of pressure on SS and other outlets as far as approved content and such and though they had him out of the way and then you took the reigns. It is a tough job, and it is much appreciated, so thank you. Best of luck.

And as far as a threat, i don't think that they are threatened by AW, just look at not even a year ago when everyone was saying the same things about a legit established mmo with war thunder and what has happened?

But at the same time, so many bads talking so much shit is more than likely chasing off would be players and wearing out the ones that do play and love the game and enjoy arty and know how to avoid being shot by it. Because like here, your article is great, but these comments man. its like hey, here is your chance to take shots at WG. Totally unrelated and slanderous, and to someone interested in playing WOT, I don't think that is very encouraging. At the same time you can't control that, but what do you do?

I spend a lot of time trying to change peoples minds and it is just a never-ending shitstorm and I just let them be, and can't imagine what WG is planning for damage control. lol

    Anyway, best of luck.

What I do not understand is WG`s public relations department screwing it up all the bloody time. Everytime they get the exact opposite of what they intend to achieve. Amateurs. Read a freaking pr book that`s not written in the cold war. Its a privilege for them that people dedicate their time to a gaming community not a privilige from them.
